As reported in the Mining Weekly Online, The private sector must be given the opportunity to participate as freely as possible in mining, Botswana Minerals Minister Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe said.

Kedikilwe, who addressed the Botswana Resource Sector Conference in Gaborone, said that the Botswana government believed in creating an enabling environment for investors to make a return on their investments.

11 May 2012 - Transnet Freight Rail studies Botswana–SA coal link

As reported in Mining Weekly Online, The feasibility study for a coal rail link between Botswana and South Africa is under way and will be completed by the end of the current financial year, State-owned Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) executive manager of planning, Deidre Strydom, said.

The coalfields in Botswana were among many drivers for the expansion of rail capacity in the Waterberg.

2 April  2012 – Eskom issues request for thermal coal supply

As reported in Mining Weekly Online, South African state owned power utility Eskom has issued a request for proposals to supply a number of its power stations. In total there are three separate specifications for 19 million tonnes of coal.

In the same article it is reported that Eskom predicts that a further 15 coal mines will need to be opened by 2015 and that over 100 billion Rand will need to be invested by 2018.

27 March 2012 – Energy trader invests in Botswana coal company

As reported on the company web site CIC Energy, a dual listed TSX and BSE company with the Mmamabula coal field in south east Botswana, announced on 27 March 2012 a strategic equity investment in the company by Vitol Energy (Bermuda) Ltd. The Vitol Group is the largest independent energy trader in the world and the private placement for CDN$10m represents a 9.1% stake in CIC Energy.

6 March 2012 – South Africa’s DoE requests information from potential IPP’s

Reported in the Mining Weekly Online on March 6 the South African DoE and National Treasury have issued a request for information (RFI) from potential developers of cogeneration facilities, as well as those coal-fired power stations, natural gas facilities and imported hydropower opportunities that could be introduced into the country’s stressed power system before March 2019.
